What Causes Warts and How Can They Treated?

There are many different kinds of warts, and some of them, like plantar warts, can show up on your feet or ankles. If you have warts, you may be wondering what causes them and how they are treated.

What Causes Warts?

Warts are caused by a virus. The most common virus that causes warts is the human papillomavirus, of which there are over 100 varieties. If the virus enters the body through a crack in the skin, it will cause the top layer of the skin to grow and develop into a wart.

There are five main types of warts, and they affect different parts of the body. These include:

  • Common warts - these are rough and dome shaped and can be anywhere on the body, but commonly on the hands.
  • Plantar warts - grown on the soles of the feet, these warts can cause pain when walking.
  • Flat warts – these are small and typically develop on the face, arms, or legs.
  • Filiform warts – these warts are the same color as the skin and occur on the face, mouth or beard area.
  • Periungual warts - occuring on the finger and on the toenails, these may affect the growth of the nail.

How Are Warts Treated?

Most warts go away without treatment, often within a few years. However, if your wart is bothering you, spreading, or causing pain, you may want to seek treatment. If you have heel pain from plantar warts, you will probably want to seek treatment quickly. Some of the ways warts are treated include:

  • Freezing the warts to remove them.
  • Removing the wart with surgery.
  • Using medication or injections to shrink the wart.
